Poker is one of the best and most enjoyable types of table games and casino games in general. It is in fact one of the first types of casino games that customers were able to play, and it has been around longer than casinos themselves. It is an excellent card game that can win you a lot of money as you play against other players that are all trying to win the huge pot of cash on the table.

Poker may be one of the first games that you could gamble on and it may be one of the most popular, but it is also one of the most difficult to play. There are a lot of different rules and values to consider, if you were to go on and play it at a competitive level successfully. You are not going to be able to learn the poker rules overnight and become an expert, you need somewhere to start. That is why, we need to start with the basics.

Below you can find the basic rules of poker for you to begin with and then once you have mastered these rules, you will then be able to look at the different techniques and skills that you can use to win you games.

Poker Basics:

A game of poker only requires 1 deck of cards, without the jokers included in this deck. A minimum of 2 players can play poker, but of course the more people that play, the more competitive it is and the harder it is. You will also need some sort of currency, for example poker chips.

There are different variations of poker that you can play, you can play either stud poker or draw poker. These types of games have very similar rules. When you play stud poker, you get 5 cards dealt to you and then it is down to you to value them cards, whether you think you have a potentially winning hand or you think that it is a hand that isn’t worth playing. If you feel it is worth playing, then you wager the chips accordingly. The person who bids the most chips wins, given that all the other players fold, unless someone matches the chips, then eventually both players will call and show their cards, the best hand wins the chips.

In Draw Poker, each player again is dealt 5 cards. Whilst the game is being played, the remaining players will try and improve their hand by trading up to 3 cards from the deck. If a player has an Ace, then that player can trade 4 of their cards. As the game is played, there are 4 options that you can do: Raise, Fold, Call and Check. If a player raises, then more chips are willing to be sacrificed as the hand of the cards is possibly more valuable than the other cards on the table. Folding means that the value of the cards is not worth wagering any chips, therefore you give the cards back to the dealer and not wager any more chips for this round. To call, means that the same amount of chips has been wagered by each player. If everyone has matched the stakes and no one wants to raise, then players can check, which means all cards are revealed to see who wins.

Poker Hands:

Here are the different poker hands that you can have in the game. Starting with the lowest value hand, up to the highest.

High Card: This is where a combination between cards cannot be made, all that you have is a single card of high value. However, if 2 players were to both have a high card with the same value, then it goes down to the value of the second highest card.

One Pair: One pair is where 2 cards have the same value.

Two Pairs: This is when a player has 2 pairs, the player with the highest pairs’ wins.

Three of a Kind: Three of a kind is when a player has 3 cards of the same value.

Straight: A straight is where the 5 cards are in a sequence, for example 9, 10, J, Q, K. If there are 2 players with straights, then the one with the higher straight wins.

Flush: A flush is when 5 cards all have the same suit. If more than one player has a flush, the player with the highest card wins.

Full House: When a player has a three of a kind and a pair in the same hand, it is called a full house. So, this could be three 10s and two 4s.

Four of a Kind: This is where a player has 4 cards of the same value.

Straight flush: A straight flush is a straight and a flush combined, where all of the cards are in a sequence and also the same suit.

Royal Flush: A royal flush is the best possible hand that you can get and cannot be beaten. It is a straight flush that has an Ace in it as the final card value, which means the cards have to be 10, J, Q, K, A and also be the same suit.
